Impetus is a kinetic and vibrant trio that explores the idea of momentum—how a single spark can set an entire structure into motion. The piece opens with a sudden jolt: a sharp, unrelenting gesture that acts as a catalyst, propelling the music into a whirlwind of rhythmic drive and interlocking patterns. From that initial strike, energy courses through every phrase, sometimes in sharp bursts, sometimes in flowing surges, but always pushing forward. The music constantly teeters on the edge of control, with rapid exchanges between the instruments and unpredictable turns that suggest both chaos and exhilaration. Despite its high velocity, Impetus is not without moments of clarity—brief respites emerge, only to be swept up again in the underlying current. The trio functions like a machine just barely held together, its components clicking, spinning, and occasionally colliding in pursuit of an unseen goal. At its core, Impetus is about the thrill of motion itself—the rush of being swept off course, the joy in losing balance, and the strange order that can emerge from apparent disorder. It is a celebration of forward energy, of ignition and aftermath, of a musical idea that refuses to sit still.
