Impetus for violin, cello, and piano is about the dynamic and compelling nature of the force that initiates and sustains movement or action. We live in a world that is constantly changing, and there are many impetuses all around us everyday. For example, advancements in deep learning algorithms, increased computing power, readily available large datasets, and the availability of affordable computing infrastructure all serve as impetuses for the advancement and widespread use of AI, which is currently taking our society by storm. An impetus can either be a physical force or a more abstract idea, like a desire or a goal. Impetus starts off with a fiery jolt that sends the whole piece into a tailspin, with the three instruments vigorously active for most of the composition, despite the short, serene middle section. Impetus was composed in 2025 for the Impulse New Music Festival in Los Angeles, CA.
